Chest Rub Recipe

This herbal chest rub is a soft aromatic balm for the chest, upper back, and bottoms of the feet during cold-weather seasons. Thyme, mullein, and peppermint leaf are infused into oil to create an herbaceous base, then blended with eucalyptus, ravintsara, and cedarwood essential oils.

Because chest rubs are usually applied over a broader area than spot salves, this version includes cocoa butter and a slightly softer wax balance so it spreads smoothly without heavy rubbing.

Benefits

Thyme:
Thyme has a strong herbal aroma and is often associated with cold-season preparations, making it a natural choice for a chest rub infusion.

Mullein leaf:
Mullein is traditionally used in respiratory-season herbalism and adds a gentle leafy component to the infused oil.

Peppermint leaf:
Peppermint leaf gives the base oil a fresh note without relying only on peppermint essential oil.

Eucalyptus and ravintsara essential oils:
These oils create the clear, camphoraceous aroma expected from a chest rub. Cedarwood anchors the blend so it smells less medicinal.

Ingredients

* Recipe note: The 5½ tablespoons listed above refers to the finished, strained herbal infused oil — not the amount of dried herbs used.

For this small batch, make your dried thyme, mullein leaf, and peppermint leaf infused olive oil separately first, then strain it well and measure out 5½ tablespoons of the finished oil for the balm.

Its is good practice to make a little extra infused oil because some oil is usually lost when the herbs are strained.

Equipment

  • Double boiler or heat-safe jar
  • Fine strainer
  • 4 oz wide-mouth jar
  • Small spatula

Method

  1. Infuse dried thyme, mullein leaf, and peppermint leaf in olive oil, then strain well.
  2. Add infused oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax to a double boiler.
  3. Warm gently until the mixture is fully melted.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vitamin E oil.
  5. Add eucalyptus, ravintsara, cedarwood, and lavender essential oils.
  6. Pour into a wide-mouth 4 oz jar and allow to cool completely.
  7. Label clearly and keep away from children.

How to Use

Massage a small amount onto the chest, upper back, or bottoms of the feet. Use before rest or bedtime when you want an aromatic, comforting rub. Do not apply directly under the nose.

Storage

Store in a cool, dark cabinet with the lid tightly closed. Use within 6 months for the strongest aroma.

Variations & Substitutions

Alternative Variations

Gentler Chest Balm

  • Use 5 drops lavender, 4 drops cedarwood, and 4 drops frankincense instead of eucalyptus and ravintsara.

Firmer Travel Tin

  • Increase beeswax to 1¼ tablespoons and reduce infused oil by ¼ tablespoon.

Safety Considerations

  • For external use only.
  • Do not apply under or inside the nose, near the eyes, or on the face of children.
  • Avoid use with asthma, breathing sensitivities, or eucalyptus/peppermint sensitivity unless advised by a professional.
  • Do not use on infants or very young children.
  • Patch test first and discontinue if the aroma feels too strong.

Additional Notes

This is an aromatic comfort rub, not a medicine. Strong eucalyptus-style balms are not suitable for everyone, especially young children or people with breathing sensitivities.

Recommended Supplies

This recipe is easier to use from a wide-mouth jar because chest rubs are applied with several fingertips rather than one small dab.

  • Double boiler
  • Wide-mouth 4 oz jar
  • Cheesecloth or fine sieve
  • Stirring spatula
  • Label noting the essential oils used
Tip: For bedtime use, apply to the upper back as well as the chest so the aroma is present without being directly under the nose.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this chest rub on children?

This formula is not intended for infants or young children because it contains strong aromatic oils.

Why use mullein in the infused oil?

Mullein is a traditional cold-season herb and fits the theme of an herbal chest rub.

Can I leave out eucalyptus?

Yes. Replace it with lavender, cedarwood, or frankincense for a gentler aroma.

Where should I apply it?

Use it on the chest, upper back, or feet, but not under the nose or near the eyes.

Why is this balm softer than the others?

Chest rubs need to spread over a larger area, so the softer texture makes application easier.

Can I use peppermint essential oil too?

You can, but use only 1–2 drops and reduce another oil. The peppermint leaf already adds freshness.
