Bergamot Body Butter

This bergamot body butter is a rich, water-free moisturizer for dry arms, legs, elbows, and winter skin. It blends shea butter, mango butter, jojoba oil, and vitamin E with a soft citrus aroma that feels fresh but not sharp.

Because body butter remains on the skin, this recipe should be made with Bergamot FCF or Bergamot BF essential oil. Do not use regular expressed bergamot in a daytime leave-on body butter.

Benefits

  • Creates a rich, anhydrous body butter without water or preservative.
  • Uses mango butter to lighten the heavier feel of shea butter.
  • Adds jojoba for glide and a smoother after-feel.
  • Gives dry skin a cheerful citrus aroma using photo-safe bergamot.

  • Spatula
  • 4 oz jar

Method

  1. Weigh the shea butter, mango butter, sweet almond oil, and grapeseed oils into a heat-safe bowl.
  2. Warm gently over a double boiler until the butters have just melted. Remove from the heat as soon as the mixture is liquid.
  3. Stir well, then chill the mixture until it becomes cloudy and thick around the edges but is not fully hard.
  4. Add the arrowroot powder – Sprinkle the arrowroot powder evenly over the thickened mixture, then fold it in with a spatula until no dry pockets remain.
  5. Whip with a hand mixer until the mixture begins to look lighter, smoother, and creamier.
  6. Add the vitamin E oil and essential oils, then whip again until the body butter is fluffy and evenly blended.
  7. Spoon into a clean 4 oz jar and tap the jar gently to help remove air pockets.
  8. Cap, label, and store away from heat, sunlight, and moisture.

How to Use

Apply a small amount to slightly damp skin after a bath or shower. Focus on dry areas such as elbows, knees, shins, and heels. This is a rich butter, so start with less than you think you need.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. Use within 6 months. If the butter melts in warm weather, it may lose its whipped texture but can still be used if it smells fresh.

Essential-Oil-Free Body Butter

Safety Considerations

  • For external use only; do not ingest bath, body, or aromatherapy blends.
  • Perform a patch test before using any new essential oil blend on the skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, broken skin, and freshly shaved or irritated areas.
  • Keep away from children and pets, and consult a qualified professional before use during pregnancy, nursing, with a medical condition, or on children.
  • For leave-on skin use, choose Bergamot FCF or Bergamot BF essential oil. Regular expressed bergamot can be phototoxic on skin exposed to sunlight or tanning beds.
  • Because this product can make bath or shower surfaces slippery if overused, apply after stepping out and drying off.

Additional Notes

This body butter contains no water, so it does not need a water-soluble preservative. Keep water out of the jar by using clean, dry hands or a small cosmetic spatula.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use regular bergamot essential oil in body butter?

No. For leave-on body butter, use Bergamot FCF or Bergamot BF only. Regular expressed bergamot can make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Why did my body butter melt?

Whipped body butter can melt in warm rooms or during shipping. Chill it until semi-firm and re-whip if the texture collapses, as long as it still smells fresh.

Do I need a preservative for this recipe?

No, not if you keep it water-free. This is an anhydrous body butter, so do not introduce water, aloe, hydrosol, or wet fingers into the jar.

Can I use cocoa butter instead of mango butter?

Yes, but cocoa butter makes the recipe firmer and adds a chocolate scent. Mango butter keeps the bergamot aroma cleaner and the texture lighter.

Is this body butter good for the face?

It is too rich for many facial skin types and contains essential oils. Use it for body skin rather than the face, especially if you are acne-prone or sensitive.

How much should I apply?

Use a pea-size amount per dry area and spread well. Applying too much can feel greasy because this formula is concentrated and water-free.
